BREAKING NEWS

TELEMEDICINE COMPANIES SEE MENTAL HEALTH AS NEXT FRONTIER

THE STORY

Telemedicine companies that have been landing a flurry of new contracts with employers and insurers to provide less expensive and more convenient medical consultations with physicians are now adding mental health services for their customers.

OUR EXPERT OPINION

“Mental health care lends itself particularly well to remote delivery, because the provider usually doesn’t need to “lay hands on the patient” to provide care.”

Rene Y. Quashie, senior counsel in the health-care and life sciences practice of Epstein Becker Green

A 375 PERSPECTIVE

I find it very reassuring that insurance companies are starting to recognize mental health as a reasonable need for assistance and coverage. It only makes sense, as the article said, to recognize what is already there and support their clients with covering at least a portion of the cost. With that in mind, telemedicine makes sense as the newest frontier. Many times a huge portion of treatment is discussion and with so many people already constantly on their phone and connected to the internet, telemedicine will allow a larger, more efficient reach of its resources.

WHY ARE JAILS MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT CENTERS OF LAST RESORT?

Incarceration is not an acceptable alternative for a broken mental health system, yet that’s exactly what has happened, in Iowa and across the country. When a person’s behavior is driven by an illness rather than a conscious decision to break the law, jail is not the right place to be.
